On Monday, December 2, 2024, the Chinese Literature Study Program of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences of Brawijaya University successfully held a drama performance as part of the final practicum assignment for the speaking skills course. This activity involved 249 students from various semesters, namely semesters 1, 3, and 5, who were divided into 20 groups. Except for the final-semester students, all participants had the opportunity to show their Chinese language skills through a stunning drama.

This drama performance aims to evaluate students’ Chinese skills after receiving material from the lecturers of the Chinese Literature Study Program. The evaluation was conducted by three native speaker lecturers who teach in this study program, who assessed various important aspects of the participants’ performances. The aspects assessed include intonation, vocabulary, and pronunciation; costumes and attributes used; as well as body movements and deep expressions of the participants.

The play’s theme was “跨文化友谊:患难与共” (Intercultural Friendship: Together in Times of Trouble), which illustrated the importance of intercultural friendship amid challenges and difficulties. This theme not only reflects the spirit of togetherness but also provides students with an opportunity to delve deeper into the values of friendship in a global context.

The series of events began with the division of groups, followed by the creation of drama scripts by each group. The students were given about a month to prepare for their performance, from language practice, and costume arrangement, to the maturation of body movements and expressions. During the preparation, the students worked together to deliver a strong and heartfelt message through drama.

On the day of the event, an atmosphere of enthusiasm enveloped all participants. Each group performed the drama with passion, bringing different characters to life with a variety of expressions and impressive body movements. As a result, outstanding performances were delivered, creating a festive and moving atmosphere.

Of the 20 groups that performed, the best six groups won awards, with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, as well as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd runner-up. Not only that, three students were also awarded special awards, namely the titles of Best Actor, Best Actress, and Actor with Best Pronunciation. These awards recognize the dedication and outstanding ability shown by the participants in mastering the Chinese language and acting.

Of course, in addition to these awards, the main purpose of this activity is to provide a final evaluation for students in the speaking skills practicum. The final grade of this practicum is given based on their performance in the drama performance, which includes all aspects that have been assessed by the evaluators.

To add to the excitement, the drama performance event was also enlivened by the appearance of 2 guest stars, each of whom performed Chinese dances and songs. The presence of these special guests provided its color, making the event more interesting and entertaining for all participants and spectators.

With the spirit of collaboration and high enthusiasm, the drama performance of the FIB UB Chinese Literature Study Program succeeded in becoming an event that not only honed students’ Chinese speaking skills but also strengthened relationships between students. This activity also proves that through acting and language arts, friendships can be established more closely, even amid difficulties.
