Tianjin, China – After successfully sending outstanding students to take part in the Double Degree 2+2 scholarship program held at one of the leading universities in China, Tianjin Foreign Studies University (TFSU), the Chinese Literature Study Program of Brawijaya University’s Faculty of Cultural Studies again sent 4 students to take part in a similar scholarship program the following year, 2024. This year, the 2+2 double degree scholarship program runs from 9 September 2024 to July 2026, providing a unique learning experience while deepening understanding of Chinese culture.

Registration for this program is conducted through the official website, with the main requirement being an HSK Level 5 certificate and a minimum score of 210. During the program, students attend lectures similar to those at UB but with a focus on the Chinese Language Education major or Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (汉语国际教育). As a double degree program, students are required to complete more credits than in a regular program.

“In addition to lectures, TFSU frequently organizes various activities aimed at introducing Chinese culture to international students,” shared one participant. “These activities include traditional arts, tea ceremonies, calligraphy, and cultural festivals.”

Below is a list of students participating in this double-degree program:

This program offers insights that go beyond textbooks or the internet. Students are encouraged to engage directly with local communities and native Chinese teachers. They also have the opportunity to meet new friends from China, allowing them to practice their Mandarin skills in real-life situations. Participation in cultural activities, such as traditional festivals, provides invaluable experiences. Students gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture, from daily habits to the values underlying its traditions.

“There is a 跨文化 (Intercultural Communication) course where we exchange information about each other’s cultures. The class is filled with international students from various countries, guided by a native Chinese teacher, making the discussions diverse and engaging,” said one of the students.

This exchange program aims to enhance participants’ Chinese language skills, both oral and written while broadening their knowledge of Chinese culture. The collaboration between Universitas Brawijaya and Tianjin Foreign Studies University is expected to not only strengthen academic ties but also expand students’ global perspectives. With the knowledge and experience gained, participants are expected to become competent educators in the Chinese language and culture.
