This course provides the experience of observing, discovering knowledge discussing concepts, making analysis, and applying theory regarding: 1) the scope of Chinese phonology in general and its sub-fields, 2) articulatory phonetics and acoustic phonetics of Chinese, 3) sound analysis and making phonetic transcriptions in Mandarin using IPA and Praat. At the end of the lecture, students are expected to acquire coherent knowledge on Chinese phonology and phonetics and can produce mini/pilot research in the form of scientific paper on phonetics and phonology. The teaching methods comprise demonstration, contextual learning, and group project-based learning. Assessment in this course includes attendance, activity in class, project, assignments, quizzes, midterm and final examination.
